In 2014, Wall Street had everyone believing that the US was an “Oasis of Prosperity,” and that the US would decouple from the rest of the world. This became known as the “Great Divergence.”
As most of the world was struggling and resorting to easier monetary policy, investors focused their attention on the US. Despite the impending tightening, the economy had the best growth prospects, causing the US Dollar to soar (in general, easing causes currencies to weaken while tightening causes them to strengthen).
