Is there a link between a workforce that feels a sense of purpose and meaning at the workplace and a company's financial performance?

The common-sense supposition is that there should be.  Indeed, in the 1990s strategy scholars initially proposed that instilling a shared sense of purpose should be the primary role of top management rather than setting strategy.  They envisioned a shift in the corporate model away from old doctrine of "strategy, structure, and systems," to one based on "purpose, process, and people."
